1992
There are 4 Houses in SMI. The Red=Augustus; Blue=La Salle; Yellow=U Paul and Green=Patrick. These houses were named after the name of Brothers who had contributed a lot to SMI. The most prominent figure is Brother Ultan Paul. He died in 2000. My house was U Paul. I love this house. Coz yellow is my favourite colour. And during 1992, U Paul was a power house in sports. Great sportsmen came from this house. Go to hell with other houses. Hehehe.
My class teacher in form 1A8 is Mr. Loh Eng Seng. A tough man. He is my Math teacher. If we made a mistake or answered incorrectly, he will pull our side burns. Ouuchh..it hurts. Although his attitude was disliked by us, he was actually a nice and friendly man.
During form 1 I met new friends. Apart from SMI 1, some of them were from SMI 2 , La Salle school, SK Manjoi 2 and Poi Lam School. No wonder there were so many students in SMI. But its alright "the more the merrier". I got my new friends, among others Affendi Mohamad(still keep in touch), Azman Shah, Amarjit Singh( now a Datuk), Chai Kent E and few others. Lupa laa...hehehe.
The most exciting moment when you enter form 1 is everything seems new. There are more opportunities and more adventures. Students would like to try something new. The most exciting one is when you join a uniform body. I joined the PKBM(Pasukan Kadet Bersatu Malaysia). I dont know why I want to join Kadet. Maybe want to be tough or be a Macho Guy hahaha.
There was some tendency during my days. The Malays intend to join PKBM. The Chinese more to Scout. The Indians and others?? In between. Some will join PKBM or Scouts and some will choose others. My days with PKBM lasted for few months. Then I quit. The reason: BORINGGG!!! Have to kawad and kawad and kawad. PKBM was the last uniform body I joined.:)
Apart from studies the Michaelians are keen into sports. The most exciting event was the INTER CLASS FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT. Guess who were the finalists for form 1 class? 1A8 and 1A10. I played as a defender. In those days the concept was easy. Those who were FAT and BIG will play as DEFENDER. My class was the champions after defeating 1A10. HAHA..actually in the final we lost 0-1 but 1A10 was disqualified as they had filled in the suspended players.
Honours won by 1A8? Yeah...we were the champions for marching competition. The Commander or leader for the marching was myself. Unanimously agreed by the whole class that I should lead them to the glory. Or else I will be KENA MAKI. But how should i lead these bunch of guys? How to win the title? I came out with a suggestion, what if I do some gimmick? I proposed that we followed just like a band leader(what they normally call for band leader) did. We throw something in the air and catch it just like the band leader did. So, my friend, Michael Lee who was a band members thought me how to throw the stick and catch it. DAMNNN!! Initially it was hard for me to throw it in the air but due to everyday training it became easier and BERBALOI.
I still remember the applause from the spectators when I managed to catch the stick. HAHAHA...akhirnya tak kena maki. But the next two years we failed to defend the title.
Mm..what else to talk about? Yeahh the cross country...
The event that Michaelians love to do annually. We had to run from the entrance of the school to the bridge near Telekom(now TM) building, then ran along the Sg Kinta River up to the next bridge near Gunung Cheroh then returned to school. U know what? I discovered myself that I am into athletic. I managed to obtain 15th place out of 400 from 1 students. Wahhhh..Although I am big man but i have the strength to run. Yeaa lorrr...that time i was not so fat like today. huhu...
Then after found my new talent I joined the athletic club. The best thing about athletic club was that we can ponteng kelas and joined the seniors Form 3-5 in training.
Being a Michaelian, we had been thought to do well in study. This to maintain the good name of the school. As a Michaelian, outsiders used to believe that the SMI students are well verse or fluent in English. This assumption is not 100% true. Some of us during school were not that good in English. We used to speak BROKEN ENGLISH. But somehow we gradually became good due to the hardwork of the teachers in teaching us.
History was my preference. Maths and Science were not my interest. I did well in history. Hard for me to understand Maths although my class teacher who tought me Maths, Mr. Tan Lee Kuai tried to make me and my classmates love the subject. Mr Tan was a nice teacher. His appearance impressed us. His hair and clothes reflects the 70's era. He still maintain the image of John Travolta. Long sideburn and bell bottom pants were his image during that year. But during my recent visit and got to meet him, his 70's look has been fade away.
This year I had been appointed as an assistant monitor. Being an assistant to Chai Kent E who was the monitor. Well, normal routine to take care of the class and wish SELAMAT PAGIIII CIKGU....(IF MONITOR WAS NOT AROUND).....
As an assistant monitor we were required to attend a leadership course. It was held at La Salle center. Nearby primary school field. That was the first time I went to the center. This Centre was the home for the Brothers and during that time it was the residence of Bro. Vincent Corkery and Bro Ultan Paul.
In the film Goodbye Boys, La Salle Centre was the LOKASI PENGGAMBARAN during the scene of PROM NITE. I still remember that hall. It was the place where the monitors get together during the course. It was a one day occasion. Games and motivational talk were held. Well I just followed the event although a little bit boring and made me YAWN...
but the best part of it was th MAKAN TIME....BBQ...made me KENYANG....
Back to what happened in school and my class. Well..we resume class as usual...from monday to friday...went to school...listen to what teacher said...normal routine...
No Uniform Body...No Society joined...BUT for sports ..YES...Athletic Club...
I was quite disappointed as no RUGBY thought to the juniors in the evening...NO RUGBY TEACHER to teach us...as Mr. Choo Ah Chye was in the morning session....
I did not represent my school in any sports....well it was a hard competition between the students to represent the school in any sports....only the best qualified....
BUT..in this year...the most memorable event which was still remembered in my mind was the 100m final for FORM 2....
I managed to qualify for the final as during the prelimary round only 8 runners turned out....
so...these 8 runners automatically qualified.....
the results.....LAST hahaha.....
Thus...nothing much happened is this year but we were getting close among the classmates...we get to know each other more deeply....but Thank God...our relationship was not beyond abnormal...hehehe....we were friends ONLY....
THE END OF PART 2....NEXT..COMING UP...THE PMR YEAR....
